Witnesses of the October 13, 1917, Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, Portugal

Witnesses of the October 13, 1917, Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, Portugal.

This year we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady to the 3 Shepherd children Lucy, Jacinta and Francisco. She appeared to them 6 times between the 13th May to the 13th October 1917. On each occasion Our Lady requested them to pray the Rosary in order to obtain peace for the world – a request very relevant in today’s world. Jacinta and Francisco, who died young, as our Lady foretold, were canonized by Pope Francis on 13th May 2017 during his visit to Fatima. Their Relics, together with the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima blessed by Pope Francis, came to different venues in Ireland recently. Their cousin Lucy was to remain in the world much longer, as a Carmelite Nun. She died in 2005.

For Our Lady’s final apparition on 13th October, she declared that She was Our Lady of the Rosary and requested the children to continue to pray the Rosary every day. That message is still relevant to-day. She foretold a miracle for that day and the Miracle of the sun was witnessed by those present.

For the 100th Anniversary of the Fatima apparitions Pope Francis granted the opportunity of gaining a plenary indulgence for those unable to make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal. The faithful, who pray before a Statue of Our Lady of Fatima in any Church during the days of the Anniversary of the apparitions on the 13th of each month from May to October 2017 and who participate in some celebration or prayer in honour of Our Lady may gain the indulgence. In order to gain the indulgence one must pray the Our Father, the Creed and pray for the Pope’s intentions under the usual conditions of Confession and Holy Communion within the octave.

Our Church in Dualla is dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima and contains a statue of Our Lady of Fatima given by the late Bishop Gleeson of Maitland, Australia, a native of Dualla, Rathclough, during his visit home during the Holy Year of 1950.

In honour of Our Lady of Fatima, the Legion of Mary Praesidium will hold Rosary and Prayers at Dualla Church at 6 p.m. on the 13th of October 2017.

All are welcome, that we may, with one voice, pray together for peace in the world, in our country, in our homes and families, and in our hearts.

“For Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” Mathew 18:20
