Build a Better Future
Did you know that there are now 18,000 groups across Ireland already helping to “Build a better future” through their involvement with PPNs? We give you, the local communities across Ireland a voice.
More than a thousand PPN representatives are currently on boards and committees of local decision-making bodies. They are contributing to decisions on climate, transport, migrant integration, community health and wellbeing, policing and many more.
You can have a voice in your local decision-making bodies, by becoming a PPN rep on one of the nineteen boards we have Tipperary PPN representation on.
There will be a PPN rep call for all our vacant seats very soon. Your community group has an interest? Nominate a rep from your group. It could be you!
Public Participation Networks allow local authorities to connect with community groups around the country and give people a greater say in local government decisions that affect their communities.
Each county and city in Ireland has its own PPN and more than 18,000 community and voluntary groups are currently members.
Membership of a local PPN also gives groups access to a range of other benefits including bespoke training programmes, information on funding and grants, and on proposals or decisions being made in their county, as well as networking and learning opportunities with other local organisations.
Hedgerows Ireland Gets National Attention! |
Hedgerows Ireland made headlines recently, marching on Dail Eireann, to highlight issues that concern its members, as well as other members of the public, in our growing fears around climate change impact, due mostly to humans. In fact, the public voice is getting louder, as we are beginning to really see what is happening to our countryside, which includes unnecessary removal and excessive cutting back regimes of these diverse habitats, pollinator corridors and sediment retainers, we call hedgerows! Hedgerows Ireland is a Tipperary-based community group and registered in our own Tipperary PPN Environmental pillar. In fact, Alan Moore, the founder, in 2019, of this proactive group, is on our Secretariat, as the Clonmel municipal district Environmental (surprise, surprise!) representative. The majority of protestors on the day came from the county, particularly Clonmel, so buses were arranged and there is a documentary being made by Cahir-based filmmaker, Paul Kelly. The event also gained both national and local media attention. Alan believes that change, though, has to be policy led and must include better education and real supports for actions that will positively impact on our hedgerows. The Tipperary PPN has four PPN representatives on the county council’s Environment & Climate Action Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) to try and influence climate action policy here in the county. We have one from our Environment pillar, Mary McMahon, one Social Inclusion rep, Charles Stanley-Smith, and two from the Community & Voluntary pillar. One seat has recently become vacant and the other is currently held by Charles Lamb. They have put the county hedgerow situation on that Tipperary policy table at the last two previous SPC meetings and, with Alan’s group’s information being fed into the county council in this structure, we are hoping to see changes in their ways of managing hedgerows to best practice of hedgecraft, as well as the issue of the misuse of herbicides. As Alan says himself, “There is often a failure to realise what we are losing, as a result of lack of knowledge in people, who are genuinely concerned about biodiversity loss, but are often unaware of the consequences of their actions, be that ‘tidying up’ a natural habitat, the overuse of herbicides or the severe cutting or removal of a hedge.”. |
