Today is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Today’s celebration invites us to reflect on the meaning of our Baptism and to take seriously the commitments we undertook to fulfil. We remember in our prayers the children who were baptised in the past year, as well as their parents, families and sponsors.  We think too of those families whose celebrations have had to be postponed due to Covid-19.

The Baptism of the Lord: Some of us grow up thinking about Baptism like a divine vaccination, like we were taken to clinics to get vaccinations, like a kind of protection! Jesus’ experience of being baptised was a celebration of being God’s beloved. This is what our Baptism is also about: God’s words repeated, but now to us. We pray to grow in this unconditional love on a daily basis (Patricia Carroll).

Fri 15 Jan is the memorial of St Ita.

Prayer for the Baptism of the Lord: Almighty, ever-living God, who when Christ had been baptised in the river Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must but do not quit.

Success is failure turned inside out,

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far.

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit.

It’s when things go wrong that you mustn’t quit.
