County Tipperary Community Games Athletics Finals 2018
Fantastic Representatives of the Parish.
On Sunday 10th June, 33 athletes from the parish participated in the County Finals of Community Games Athletics at Moyne Athletics track. They performed exceptionally well and were fantastic representatives of the parish.
The day started at 9.15am with a parade of all the representative areas around the track. Marching behind the Boherlahan Dualla banner, they were very impressive as one of the most represented areas and coordinated in the parish colours.
The sprint races commenced immediately with races and heats occurring simultaneously on both sides of the track which meant a lot of coordination was required from the committee and parent volunteers to ensure no athlete missed their race.
We had very early success with Anna Murphy getting a silver medal in the U14 girls hurdles. Very quickly thereafter we had multiple athletes qualifying for semifinals and finals with notable success for Harry Ryan winning a silver medal for U8 boys 80m and Abbie Horgan getting pewter (4th place) in the U10 girls 100m.
Ryan Bargary continued his impressive Ball Throw skill that he had shown originally in the field in Boherlahan by winning the U12 Boys Ball Throw. As the gold medalist, Ryan qualifies for the All Ireland finals in UL in August!
The U12 boys 600m came to a dramatic conclusion. Due to the number of entrants in the race, three timed heats were held. Daire O Donnell comfortably won Heat 1. More success followed for Tadhg O Donnell who also cruised home in first place in Heat 2. Following the third heat, it was then a matter of waiting for the times of the heats to see who had won…. and Daire O Donnell won gold, with Tadhg a mere second later in silver position! It was amazing running by both boys – highly unusual to have two such talented runners from the one area.
After all the individual events, the relays were held. In these highly exciting races we had two great results. The U10 mixed team came in pewter (4th) position – comprising of Sophie Moynihan, Conor O Donnell, Abbie Horgan and Conor Fogarty. The U12 boys team came in pewter (4th) position also – comprising of Daire O Donnell, Darragh Heffernan, Ryan Bargary and Tadhg O Donnell.
Thus we ended with a medal haul of 2 gold, 3 silver and 9 pewter. Our two gold medalists, Ryan Bargary and Daire O Donnell will go on to represent County Tipperary at the All Ireland Community Games finals in University of Limerick in August.
Very special thanks to the parents of all the participants. Due to the huge numbers of competitors, it was a long day – but great patience and team spirit was shown by all the children.
Thanks to Garret for organizing the jerseys for the competitors, and to those who brought their own Boherlahan/Dualla jerseys. This ensured we were a very impressive and cohesive area.
Thanks to Liz, Karen, Garret, Siobhan, Mary, Tiernan, PJ, Martha, Gayle and Annmarie who took responsibility for different age categories and ensured that no athlete missed their race.
Finally, huge thanks to our secretary Annette O Donnell who has undertaken an enormous organizational role this year. From ensuring all athletes registered correctly and on time, to providing information for parents, to knowing all the many rules and regulations of the different sports and activities, she has worked tirelessly and efficiently on behalf of the children for Boherlahan Dualla Community Games.
