Death of Jimmy Murphy: Late on Saturday evening, 3rd June, Jimmy Murphy, Farranavarra, passed away peacefully at the South Tipperary General Hospital. He had not been well for some time and his death was not entirely unexpected. He was in his 87th year and had celebrated his sixtieth wedding anniversary with his wife Mary in 2016. He was the last surviving member of his family. Jimmy epitomised all that was best in family, parish and community. His friendship, generosity and loyalty knew no bounds. He was a man of faith, nurtured over the years through his regular attendance at church services. That faith proved a great comfort to him in his final years. He was a great family person and whenever one saw Jimmy one also saw Mary. Transporting his grandchildren to the local national school leaves an abiding memory. He loved the outdoor life and, together with Mary, he spent enjoyable hours enhancing and beautifying his environs in Farranavarra. Jimmy had a great sense of humour and his quick witty response to a situation was unique. His company left one with an uplifted spirit, a tear in the eye with laughter and a wonder at the simple but extraordinary experiences of his life. Jimmy lived his entire life in Farranavarra and had a great sense of the importance of place, history and lore. His rootedness to parish and his great recollection made him an important source of enlightenment to the local historians. He was always forthcoming with information, solving many queries in the process. It was no surprise that part of his life-story was revealed through the pages of the 2016 historical journal. Jimmy was a great community person, giving freely of his time to numerous parish events over the years. Indeed, he was the greeting face encountered by patrons who enjoyed his banter and the friendly welcome. He spent over thirty years on the Parish Council and will be best remembered for his work with the elderly in maintaining their medical alarms. He was endowed with a technical mind and spent many-an-hour of his leisure time solving problems with the alarm units and re-installing them for use. Jimmy loved sport, especially our native games. In his youth, he played hurling with Suir View and Boherlahan and in later years he was a regular supporter of the local teams at their matches across the county. Going to matches broadened his horizons, getting to know the length and breadth of the county and the country. He was vividly able to recall his first visit to Croke Park and discovering Nelson’s Pillar and Clery’s Clock. He often talked about the magic of Christy Ring, Mick Mackey and the Rackard brothers. He was a very proud man in 1996 when his two sons, Seamus and Michael, won a county senior hurling medal with the local team. On Monday evening, Jimmy’s remains were reposed at Devitt’s Funeral Parlour before removal to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Boherlahan. Members of the GAA club and the Parish Council provided a fitting guard-of-honour. Following Requiem Mass on Tuesday, which was celebrated by Fr Joe Egan and assisted by Fr Jimmy O’Donnell PP, Fr Peter Brennan PP, Fr Jim Egan PP, Fr Jimmy Donnelly PP and Fr Tom Dunne CC, Jimmy was laid to rest in Ardmayle Cemetery. Our heartfelt sympathy to his wife Mary, daughters Maureen, Patricia and Christina, sons Seamus and Michael, sons-in-law Christy, John and John, daughters-in-law Deirdre and Liz, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal grámhar.
