A Mile for Martin
A Mile for Martin
There was a wonderful turn out of people of all ages last Sunday at 12.00 to support the "Mile for Martin" in aid of the Ferncombe Family Fund. Gaile NS had never before seen such numbers assemble in the playing field. Hundreds of cars were parked across the road in Paddy Ryan's field, ably directed by a very efficient team of volunteer stewards.
The sun shone brightly on one of the hottest days of the year. Drinks and refreshments, given by the local people, were freely available in a specially erected marquee while a team of volunteers registered and accepted donations from the participants.
Then school principal, Dónal Ryan, invited the assembly to begin the journey to Gaile Cross, also called Fahey's Cross, and back. First out of the blocks were the young runners who set off at a blistering pace. Everyone else walked at an easier rate in the blazing sun. The volunteer stewards were again in complete charge of safety and restricted the passing traffic for the duration of the event. The road to Gaile Cross was a sea of people for almost its entire length as young and old demonstrated the wonderful sense of community which drew them out to support this event.
On return to the school grounds, refreshments were again provided and a raffle was held among all who registered, with prizes donated by Ronaynes of Thurles, where Martin worked for many years. Dónal Ryan then thanked everyone who attended, and asked Mags Ferncombe to say a few words. She expressed her delight and gratitude at seeing such great support.
